Sunday at Trout Lake

I kept hearing about fire at Trout Lake on Sundays, with a DJ, but I simply never made it out - busy or into other things, or just not up for a fiery outing once Sunday rolled around. Finally, though, I decided to go out and maybe join in..... it has been three or four years since I spun fire for the very first time at Trout Lake on a Wednesday, and I was excited to return.

Nothing. No one. A few lone souls walking their dogs. Actually, someone else did show up, also after having been gone for a number of years, also confused by the sudden silence. I kept looking across the lake to see if the fire had perhaps moved to the other side. No luck. I was the lone poi spinner in the night.

I know about Thursdays. Eventually I'll make it out to Kits Beach again. But what about Trout Lake? Are Wednesdays finished too? I'd even love a spot to gather in the evening and spin and practice unlit. I miss the community side of poi and other flowtoys. I used to go on Saturdays to Robson Square, but my weekends have gotten busy!

Anyway, I've seen the interest expressed in other threads as well. I'm curious to know if anyone has anything planned.....

fire safety help?

Hey, I'm kinda new to the fire community and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who may be able to give me some pointers? I'm trying to find someone who can help me out with the safety aspects of the art so I know what I'm doing and don't burn myself to a cinder. If anyone knows of anyone who might be able to help, or classes around the Vancouver area, it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks a lot!

what happened to the community?

The community around juggling and fire spinning is the most important part, in my opinion. So why does or did the community disperse post 2006? It was thriving a few years back, and now seems to be individuals without any inspiration to continue. This is because the community colapsed.

I know the police have been shutting things down. Was it because only Luxotica had a permit? Why didn't anyone actually pick this up post-lori?

does anyone have answers to these questions, or solutions on how to:
1) revive the Vancouver community
or
2) Merge the impact of two communities to combine inspiration?
3) There was a small amount of talk of a fire festival.... anyone have any idea how to accomplish that?

Keep up the good private work folk, and lets bring it together!!

Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man
Saturday, May 10 at 7 pm, Japanese Hall (487 Alexander St)

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary Special Edition DVD release of David Vaisbord's Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man documentary, Larry Harvey, Executive Producer of Burning Man, will be in Vancouver for an evening of celebration and debauchery on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Japanese Hall (487 Alexander St, Vancouver.) The evening will begin with a screening of this cult classic film and escalate into pure riot and revelry! The after party for this even could only feature a Burning Man inspired fashion show, Blackberry Wood, Jay Michael and DJ Timothy Wisdom – not to mention food, fire... . a mobile boardroom parked outside to settle emergency red tape, celebrity monkeys and a giant mechanical mondo spider.

The event will be presented in two parts:

FULL MEAL DEAL: Film Screening, Discussion and Party: $25 advance, $30 door
7pm Doors
7:50pm INTRO! And ... . Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man film presentation!

PARTY ONLY: Schmoozin' & After Party: $10 advance, $15 door

Guests will be treated to an evening of pure revelry, mischief, stunning media and all night entertainment. View the film that changed the face of the underground, creative community of Vancouver amongst the same colourful and energetic crowd that inspired it. The Japanese Hall will be cleverly disguised as a piece of the "Playa". We have a host of mischief makers plotting the uprising.. . . On visuals: David Rimmer, James Deane and Media Victim. Bid credit also goes to Burn BC, GVIAS and the Inner City Commune -- these folks know how to throw down a party. Cash bar, brilliant art installations, décor, fire shows, food, costumes and clever surprise theatrics all part of the scene. Costumes encouraged. Anything goes.

The film Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man is a fascinating look at the lives of two of Canada's most brilliant and dangerous performers, Tom Comet (Circus Orange) and Christine "Tiny" Taylor, who take their act of extreme hazard, buzzin and sparking with chainsaws and flame throwers to Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Seasoned Burners and inquisitive minds alike will marvel at the scene -- filmed at the renegade desert city 10 years ago! In those 10 years, Gemini nominated filmmaker David Vaisbord, creator and producer, has shown this film to seduced audiences via TV Ontario, CTV, and BRAVO! It played to sell out audiences in New York and Chicago, made celebrities out of its two leads -- the hair-raising comedic/thrill-seeking duo Tom Comet and Christine Taylor -- and received the Special Jury Prize at the Yorkton Short Film festival. David Vaisbord, Christine Taylor, Tom Comet (Circus Orange), as well as Larry Harvey and Marian Goodell from Burning Man will be holding the discussion panel following the film and shakin' it up with us at the after party.

Indeed, this is more than a DVD release. This is a unique, creative and inclusive community celebration. Get involved with the crew!
There are still a few volunteer positions available. Get a hold of Andrea Curtis, the event mama at orangeandorange@gmail.com.

Bonfire Presents... FLOWMOTION - psychedelic jamz from Seattle this Friday night! :)

Hey everyone!

Here's your regular, show-week, friendly little reminder that this Friday night we are in for AN ABSOLUTE TREAT... as Seattle, Washington's masters of groove rock return to Vancouver once again!

Bonfire Music & Events presents...

The Pacific North-West's fastest rising live act

FLOWMOTION

Friday April 4th
The Fairview Pub
898 West Broadway

Doors at 9:00 - Show starts at 10:00

$10 admission

With their high-energy, infectious rock and roll, Flowmotion dominates the live music scene in the Pacific Northwest. But with booked performances at the biggest West Coast music festivals this summer including High Sierra, Joshua Tree and Earthdance Northern California, they are poised to break onto the national scene in 2008.

Flowmotion's live performances are renowned for stellar musicianship, contagious energy, packed dance floors and, courtesy of their two lead guitarists, smoking guitar riffs. Fronted by singer/ songwriter Josh Clauson (electric guitar, vocals), with RL Heyer (electric and slide guitars, vocals), Sabu Miyata (bass), Scott Goodwin (drums, vocals) and Bob Rees (percussion, vibraphone), Flowmotion's expertly controlled grooves harness the power of their funky, percussion-driven rock and roll.

The band also hosts and headlines the Summer Meltdown, a 3-day music festival held in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. 2007's 7th annual event drew over 3,000 people. The festival has hosted such bands as Zilla, Yard Dogs Road Show, Bill Frisell, alto sax extraordinaire Skerik, Garaj Mahal, Sky Cries Mary and Bassnectar. Seattle's own Blake Lewis has also graced the Meltdown's stage as both performer and festival emcee.

It could be fun to stay till it is dark enough to burn and then bring out the fire.

Have a happy day,

My best friend Lola came to visit me from Kentucky in August.
She brought appropriate clothing with her, mostly sundresses.

Since then she's been denied entry back into the states to return to to husband, friends & job and is stuck living with her 'rents in Penticton.
She's applying for permanent residency and expects to be home in 6 months.

She's safe, she's okay...
But she's cold!

Wanted: Warm (not totally unstylish & ugly) clothes/coats/shoes/boots to beg or borrow for 6 months.
Lola is 5'8'', wears size 12-16, large hips & bum, smaller chest.
Going to work in the Ok, so nurse's scrubs are also appreciated.

Will be visiting Oct.20 for the Work Less Party Party, so contact me this week if you have anything for her.

Thanks in advance.

Natalie of Radiant Heat will be coordinating a fire show for the After Burn at the Waldorf on October 12th.
Radiant Heat will be doing a short number and then safety crew & fuel will be available for other fire perfomers in the community.
This will not be an open jam but rather an arena for fire folk to show their stuff, you must make pre-arrangements to participate.

Please express your intent to perform to myself as I am coordinating logistics and I will pass on your info to Natalie.

Upcoming guerilla events seeks hot performers

Hey there Flamily

I'm organizing two events that need some entertainment involving a riske touch and moves you might not show at family events. We hold these events as fundraisers for PedalPlay ( http://www.pedalpower.org/?q=pedalplay). This isn't a particularly erotic request, but we're looking for some fire and or stilt performers to contribute to:

-' Off the Grid, Off the Charts' Sept 1 @ undisclosed location with PedalPlay's pedal powered sound system and DJ Robin Banks, Jim Rebel and some friends (maybe you?) late night party. For this a small group of people who'd like to work with me to create a couple of 15 minute shows to do, possibly in an area with trees nearby. I'm working on finding the Silks woman that was beside our baseball diamond @ Illuminares as well. The fuel is covered for the show, and an small honorarium can be given to the group.

-'Velomutations 07' on Sept 22 (sat.night). Velomutations 2006 was the first event I did fire and stilts for in Van and coordinated Shauna, Phil and Pest- it was huge, with about 5oo people at the PedalPlay studio. Other performers included the Sprockettes 16 girl dance troupe from Portland Oregon (they use fire now as well, and a carousel) and the Brakes all boylesque bike dance (and strip) breakdance crew locals. Also the BC Clettes will be performing after returning from their West Coast Tour this September. As well, fuel for the show and a small honourarium can be made available. But this also happens to be the best party I've been to in vancouver so far.

That also means FIRE TEX as well. I had a great time working with the Fire Brigade for Illuminares and enjoyed the contributions everyone had to make. Lets do it again. -glenna.

BC Fire Spinning / Flow Arts Gathering / Festival?

I'm just wondering if there is any interest in having a first spinning / flow arts gathering/festival in BC this summer. I wouldn't mind organizing such a thing, but I'm not ready to take on something like that alone, nor would I want to if I were capable.

I'm imagining a friday night to sunday afternoon set up. Camping in a beautiful natural setting with open spaces, burn barrels, a fire pit, music and freaky peeps. We could go super low-tech and tribal by only having acoustic instruments or we could find some djs, a power hook up and some equipment, but that would bring up the cost... unless someone wanted to donate.

Workshops in the afternoon could be organized, with a mix of different mediums, different level classes and jams, aswell as any fun and/or important non-flow related things. Then the fires could fill the space all night with magic and music. : )

A site, wood, a fuel station, welcoming people, safeties, ceremony, tickets, promotion and workshops could be organized with a fair amount of work. Food, sitting areas, safe/sacred/healing space, large shade structure(s!), and music would be wonderful to have, but right now seem secondary, but may change depending on how much energy people have.

First off, if this could happen this summer, would anyone be interested in going? Please share your thoughts and opinions.

Then, is there anyone that has time or energy that they would be willing to put into this project?

with many blessings,
Alex

Off-Body hooping workshop this Sunday, July 8. 2007!

3:30-5:00pm at the Dance Centre, Davie and Granville St

$30 if you have a hoop, $35 to rent a hoop.

Learn vertical and horizontal hand-hooping, swings and hand-to-hand passes, jumps and skipping, as well as figure-8s, spins, stalls, tosses and turns! Visit the Images page at http://christahoops.com to see videos of some of these moves :)

We will not be practicing any on-body hooping, so using a lightweight kiddie hoop is fine (even recommended, if you have concerns about developing bruises on your hands from hand-hooping with the usual adult-weight hoops) as long as you can still step or jump through the hoop (slow-motion is fine!)

You can PM me here on Tribe if you have any questions, or register by emailing christahoops@gmail.com

Visit http://christahoops.com to see more workshop and weekly class dates (Mondays at the Roundhouse start next week!) and visit the HoopShop page if you're interested in buying a hoop!

Thursday Fire - change in location!!!!

Hey everybody,

We were shut down at the beach last week. That's right - we were told not to have fire there any more. So, for this week, We were thinking of trying Trout Lake. It seems that lots of spinners are from the east side so it might make sense to have it in the neighborhood. It's also close to the sky train for easy access. If this doesn't work out, we can always move back to Kits, except we would have to go farther down the beach.

So - This week - Trout Lake
- Next week - we'll keep you posted.

Please pass the word to anyone who might not get this message.

When you get to Trout Lake, follow the path in from the parking lot and turn left when you reach the water. The path leads to a gravel area with wooden bleachers. It's a good, safe spot to spin.

See you there :-)

Vancouver Hoopers and Vancouver Poi'ers have been doing this for a few months.. dunno how we managed to not get it posted over here, sorry!

On sunny days, we play up by the stairs in front of the Art Gallery Cafe, on rainy days we go underground to the Robson Square Ice Rink.

Saturdays, 2pm, Robson and Howe. Poi lessons at 1pm offered by David for $10 (I'm repeating what Random said, though I Haven't checked it out myself - see Vancouver Poi tribe for his contact info). Free random hooping, poi-ing, whatever-other-toy-ing at 2, usually goes for a couple hours, usually has someone supplying a small stereo but you're welcome to bring your own just in case no one else does...
Summer Hoop Play classes and workshops

Hallo hot fire performers! Interested in getting into fire hooping, or improving your skills? These are not fire-specific classes, but will help you build the skills you need to become a stellar fire hooper! (check out the Cinderbella's fire hoop building workshop at the end of May, too!)

Hoop Play at the Dance Centre
Tuesdays – All Levels
July 3 – 24 7:00-8:00pm and 8:00-9:00pm
July 31 – Aug 21 8:00-9:00pm only.

$60 for four sessions, $120 for eight, bring your own hoop or buy one for $40, rent one for $5 per session. Drop-ins, if space allows, are $17 per class. Contact me at christahoops@gmail.com to register soon, as these classes have already started to fill up!

Hoop Play at the Roundhouse
Mondays – All Levels
July 9 – Aug 20, 7:30-8:30pm, no class Aug 6
$100 includes a custom hoop to be delivered to the second class, or $60 if you have your own hoop. $12 drop-ins with your own hoop, or $17 to drop-in and rent a hoop.
** these classes filled quickly last year, so drop-ins are not guaranteed. First come-first served, register through the Roundhouse at http://roundhouse.ca or by phone at 604 713 1800

Hoop Play Workshops at the Dance Centre
These workshops are designed for hoopers with some previous experience. Tips and techniques for each specific area of hooping will take us through a challenging and fun afternoon! $30 with your own hoop, $35 if you need to rent a hoop, register with me at christahoops@gmail.com

Sunday July 8 3:30-5:00pm
Off-body – vertical and horizontal hand hooping, skips and jumps, body stalls, and more! You may wish to bring along a second, lightweight hoop (kiddie hoops are good for many of these moves) OR start practicing your hand hooping now so your hands have time to build up resistance to the pressure of the hoops!

Sunday July 22 3:30-5:00pm
Choreography – dramatic beginnings and endings, tempo matching, playing with different music themes, linking moves together with smooth transitions, and more! The class will include time to develop your own short choreographed piece, either alone or working with a partner. This is a great session for anyone interested in performing with us at Illuminares! Bring the hoop you plan to perform with, and if you’d like to test out a potential costume for hoop-ability, bring that too!

Sunday Aug 5 3:30-5:00pm
On-body – working with the hoop at your hips, knees, chest, shoulders, both horizontal and angle hooping. If you have more than one hoop, bring your favourite AND another that is as large as possible – having a slower hoop will help with many of these moves.

Hoop Shop
If you need a new hoop for summer, this is the time to order! I will be quite busy through the second half of June, and may not be able to make hoops with my usual turnaround time, but the end of May and beginning of June are relatively quiet and hoop orders will be filled quickly. Visit the HoopShop page at http://christahoops.com for prices and decoration options!

Thanks for reading!

request for performance

hi everyone!
i'm co-organizing a "green" 400-attendees summer bbq down at Jericho beach and wanted to inquire if your group is interested in performing at our event?
this year's bbq is the 3rd green bbq and will go down on Wednesday July 25 6-10pm. we're four environmentally minded non for profit organizations which include the GreenDrinks.org, bcsea.org, http://www.yepcanada.ca/vancouver.htm and http://www.sfubiz.ca/impact/

If you have a choreographed sequence or not does not matter. However, if you have a professional group of poi-ers or know of one, there may be some money in there for a performance. If you know of a professional fire-juggling group in the lower mainland, that info would be very useful to.

Call me if you have any questions at 604.224.7421. Thanks already and I'll keep the tribe in the loop about the event.
-Richard

Hi, I am very intrigued and am planning on trying to breathe fire, I would like to try to be as safe as possible about this though. Is there anyone out there willing to help me? Does anyone know someone in the lower mainland who does lessons?

Come one come all to have a glorious evening of fire and dance.
Come to Kits beach to light all kinds of things on fire. There are poi, hoops, maybe a staff or two, glow toys and lots of fun people, hopefully you :-)

This Thursday meet at 8:30 on kits beach. Go to the restaurant and then walk toward the volleyball nets to a quiet area of beach. Of course, it might not be too quiet when the fire and lights show up :-)

Bring Fuel, toys, safety equipment, music ( I have little speakers that can be attached to mp3 players), musical instruments, a happy smile.

See you there,

The Amazing Fire Poi Trick !!!!!!

Hey guys,
After a wonderful night of spinning and happiness, I went to pack up my poi and found something amazing!
It seems that my cathedral poi with ball chain and black leather handles had undergone a sort of firey rebirth. They had become cathedral poi with ball chain and nylon handles :-)

Did anyone else notice a similar - but opposite - change in their poi last night?

If so, let me know. I'd love to have mine back - they were a lovely gift from my wonderful boyfriend and they mean a lot to me.

Thanks,
Heather

Hey everybody,
We're going to hoop and poi and burn and whatever else on Thursday at Kits beach. We set a time of 8:30 to meet but I might be late because I have parent teacher meetings that night (which I had totally forgotten when we set the time.) anyway, everyone's meeting in front of the resturaunt and then walking down the beach to find a quiet spot. We went last week and it was wonderful.
Hope to see you there (even if im a bit late)

happy burning :-)

moving fire fun to Sunday night this week.

I was fully planning to go out again on Saturday night, but unfortunately, life has gotten in the way. Since I can't make it on Sat, I will be spinning under the bridge at 8:00 on Sunday night instead. Anyone who wants to come play is welcome. There's single and double poi, maybe a fire hoop, fuel, and anything you want to bring.

Hope to see you there :-)

Suggestions : long underwear :-)

I'm going to be under the kits side of the burrard bridge at 8:00 tonight. there will be some fire toys there that everyone can play with - single and double headed poi and Christa may be there with a fire hoop. Bring any fire toys that you might want to play with :-)

I'll bring a soak can, fuel and a fire blanket.

Bring fuel if you have it of feel free to use mine :-)

It might be cold tonight but we can warm up with the fire!

See you there,
Non-fire studio space available for practice, Friday nights 8:30-9:30 downtown.

Okay, so I didn't get anyone registered in my Friday night class, but I still have the studio space, SO.... if you would like to have a warm, dry space to work on your own stuff or just dance around, but not muck around with renting a studio yourself, you're welcome to come down and join me. I may be working on my own moves, or teaching private lessons, so please be aware that this will not be a lesson night!

Bring your own music if there's something specific you want to practice with, or just come and groove with whatever I've got hooked up :) The sound system takes both CDs and iPods/MP3 players.

The space is at HarbourDance, 927 Granville up on the top floor, the studio is to the right of the stairs. $5 drop-in, cash only, paid to me when you come in the door, first-come-first-served (though I'd be SHOCKED if there was more than a dozen people showing up).. and I'll try this out for the remainder of the Friday nights in January and see how it works out!

I'll be there, so no advanced committment is required.. drop in if you want :)

Happy New Year!

The fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank was a great success, raising $120 which turns into over $360 worth of groceries for the folks who need some help putting food on their tables. Thanks to everyone who came out to make the evening a success - it was great fun, too!

Class updates:
Everything is getting started in the next week - Friday classes start this Friday, Jan 5th!

Tuesday nights at the Dance Centre are filling up fast! For January and February, there are just a few spaces left, and March is already half-full. Register soon to ensure your spot!

Friday nights at HarbourDance and Monday nights at the Roundhouse both have a number of spaces left, but register soon - the Roundhouse classes have been completely full for the last three sessions, and if you wait too long you may be disappointed!

More information on dates, times and fees for these classes can be found at christahoops.com on the Calendar page. To register for classes at the Dance Centre and Harbour Dance, email christahoops@gmail.com and to register for classes at the Roundhouse, visit roundhouse.ca or call 604 713 1800.

Hoop Shop:
I've got an order of glitter tapes and a range of vinyl colours coming in, so if you're looking for a special sparkly hoop, or a multi-hued rainbow hoop, let me know! Details can be found on the HoopShop page at christahoops.com

Hoop Play in the Spring
I haven't started to plan these sessions yet, so if you would like to make a suggestion about times, days and locations, now is the time to have your voice heard! I'm also thinking about setting up a punch-card system, where you would be able to buy a 5- or 10-class card, and then come to any of the Dance Centre or Harbour Dance classes that happen to fit your schedule in any given week. Let me know what you think!

Sorry about the late cross-posting, folks!

Friday, December 15, 2006 8:30-9:30pm
Harbour Dance Centre, 927 Granville St (between Smithe and Nelson) top floor, the studio to the right..
No set cost, just a monetary contribution to the Vancouver Food Bank
I'll have an envelope or box for you to slide the $$ in, just give what you can, no judgements about small donations... ask me about the time all I had to eat for three days was a bizarre baked mixture of water, flour and brown sugar :)

Bring your own hoops, though a few will be provided. Got poi? Bring 'em too :)
We'll have sock poi, streamer poi, and potentially a couple staffs if I can figure out how to cover them so they don't damage the floor when they get dropped ('cause just like hoops, they WILL get dropped!)

I'll have my iPod plugged in to the sound system for some groovy music to dance around to, and I'll be totally happy to help you out with any tricks you're working on if you want a hand with something specific, otherwise I'll just be dancing along beside you!

A few of us are also talking about going dancing afterwards, particularly to the downtown location where Timothy Wisdom is spinning (he's got his own Tribe if you wanna check out his stuff..)

If you're interested in going, please toss me a message at christahoops@gmail.com so I can track numbers.. and feel free to chat it up on the Vancouver Hoopers tribe :)

Questions? Did I miss any important info? It would be great to play with as many of you as can make it out that night!
Fire Spinning and Environmental Ethics

Hey friends,

I am wondering if anyone considers the environmental reprocussions which fire spinning has? With the fight against peolpe not using cars because of the endless fuel we are burning I began to think about it after a full year of spinning and started to wonder - If I won't drive a car because of the gas usage, why would I spin fire and burn gas for pure fun?

This isn't my only worry. I worry about the creatures underneath our feet as well. Spin offs of fuelled wicks happen constantly at trout lake, where I have also seen many little froggies hopping. Are these creatures considered, and what is done about it? I have seen fuel spills at the side of the lake, where many things would be living, and I think about it and wonder - would I want someone pouring camp fuel in my garden?

I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but there are things we can do. If we consider the idea of going Carbon Neutral to offset the carbon costs of gas spinning. I can hear the argument coming already "it isn't that much carbon" but to that I would say it shouldn't be that much to go carbon neutral either. http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Climate_Change/What_You_Can_Do/carbon_neutral.asp

I also think the fueling station might want to be moved to a more appropriate spot - one that isn't next to the water where there are many sensitive creatures... or if anyone else has any great ideas, feel free to post them...

Cost??
$110 ($85 for tuition + $25 for practice poi to keep) ***

Advanced Workshop!!!

**Requirements::: must have experience spinning poi and know the basics relatively well ie::: Butterfly Combinations, Weave Combinations, Turns etc ***

In this two day, four hour (total), workshop, movement and transitions with your poi will be a main focus. Learn how to move with your poi as though they're extensions of your body....thru a series of movement orientated exercises and games, it's the aim of the workshop to offer a greater understanding of how your body moves in accordance with your poi. Music will be an integral part of this process as it's music that moves us to greater heights in our dance.

Transitions will also be practiced as having smooth transitions is what makes an amazing poi spinner!!! Together as a class we will go thru and practice transitions together finding the small intricacies of the shift and changes between the different moves and families of moves.

This class will be taught by the Dynamic Duo Mystress Fyre and Natalie Spence of Radiant Heat. THey are teaming up again to offer up an amazing Advanced Workshop. Natalie's Movement skills coupled with Belva's teaching experience is sure to bring the roof down with an amazing and awe inspiring workshop!!!
Dec 2nd and 3rd

Where??
677 Davie Street
Vancouver BC

Time??
Saturday Class 3pm-5pm Birmingham Room 3rd floor
Sunday Class 6:30pm-8:30pm Jen Dally Room 4th floor

Cost???
$85 total. Please bring your own practice poi. No Fire Poi Please ***

***Now I know your wondering "Why so much money?? EEKK!!" Room rental is rather spendy in Vancouver as are tickets to fly from San Francisco to Vancouver....this trip is dedicated to holding workshops hence the cost hike so I can cover all my costs. I can also say with pride that I am a *fabulous* teacher that has years of experience behind me that shows in my class!!!

Again, please feel free to contact me with any questions or queries or wants to register!!!
Subject: [Vancouver] Buy Nothing Day and Fair Trade Week at SFU
Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 18:20:02 -0800

Hey Jammers!

I've been working with Oxfam SFU to create a fair trade week from Nov. 20th - Nov. 24 and I figured it might be of interest to you. All week, except Thursday, we'll be selling fair trade goods on campus (Simon Fraser University, in Convo Mall) We also have some fun awareness raising activities that, if you participate in, you can be entered to win a gift basket of fairtrade items (One basket per day). We also have a gift wrapping station and cups of fair trade coffee by donation. On friday there will also be a swap meet, where you can get rid of your old junk and/or pick up someone else's "junk" for free! I encourage all of you to come out.

On Thursday, of course, it is BUY NOTHING DAY! We're going to be giving out free samples of nothing on campus and encouraging students to sign our buy nothing pledge.

On top of that, I'm also planning to do some BND things off campus, and I would love it if any of you could join in and/or help organize it. It is going to be a shopping-death-flashmob at metrotown in the evening. (Probably at around 6:30)
The details still need to be sorted out, but the general idea is that we'd gather into a big court area in metrotown mall and stage a "death by shopping" scene, where everyone runs in screaming and looking like consumourism has beat them up (bar codes stamped on skin, clothes hangers stuck in shirts, chokeing on monopoly money, etc.) and then we all die dramaticly. (Oh the creative potential!)
There will also be a more activisty part of this before the flashmob, where we will go around advocating Buy Nothing Day to shoppers. (Handing out flyers, talking to people, asking shoppers if they're aware about the impacts of consumourism, etc.) The idea is that we'd come in from all entrances in small groups (depending on how many people are participating), raise awareness, and walk towards the flashmob spot and meet up all at the same time. (of course, by meet up, I mean make a scene)
However, I'm not quite solid in this plan because I don't know how horrible the security would be with regards to our actions, so we're always open to more ideas :)
If you're interested please let me know!

Cheers,
-Loretta

David and Diane are beautiful dancers, and have a wonderful sense of joy when they are playing with their skill toys (he's a strong poi'er, she's a lovely hooper).. and they are doing lessons!

Super nice people, wonderful patience, and so much fun! I highly recommend them :)

Hi everyone,

I feel like I'm trying to fill some pretty big shoes, but maybe with some help, we can make this grow. A couple of months ago, Nick emailed me from Europe asking me to teach some poi here in his place. I've been doing just that, but now I recognize the need for more poi info around Vancouver. I've started up a poi tribe, and now I need help populating it!

I've posted just a few events so far: a couple of drop-in classes that I'm running, and an on-going Saturday gathering at Robson Square. I'd love it if other poi spinners wanted to add their own info, not to mention come join us!

Suggestions, comments, and questions are, of course, always welcome. Thanks!

Halloween Fire Show in Burnaby

Hey all! I'm organising a community pyro show in Burnaby this year, and it occurred to me that having some fire artists there would bring the whole thing to a different level. I loved the feel of the pre-burn ceremony, and I was wondering if anyone was a) available halloween nigtht, and b) interested... I'm planning on hopefully starting with some fire art, and then moving on to the flame effects (I did some of these at Burning Man, and I work in Special Effects in the movies), and then finishing with a fireworks display. All of this would be followed up by an after party at my place, of course... We have a couple of weeks to chat about it, so I though I'd fire the intention out there... I'm hoping to do this for Halloween and Canada Day each year...

talk to you soon!
Where do you get your gear? Know any Local sources?

I am just getting serious about Fire Spinning and am on the quest to get / make my own set of poi. Mystress of Fire has been very helpful with information and instruction (Thanks Belva!) but there seems to be a void left by Luxotica for purchasing parts and equipment locally.

So it got me wondering: There are many fire performers here in Vancouver and Luxotica cannot have been the only source for equipment (their inventory is quite good but not all encompasing). So please let's share some info and help each other out. (Ok, I admit I am the one who wants the help .... but I hope others can benifit too)

Main question: What Equipment do you use and where do you get it? (online? local?) Any preferences?

I would prefer to make my own so where can I find parts locally?
Specific interest for me is ball chain and wick but suggestions for all things poi / fire related would help others too.

Known online resouces ~ it is local sources I am interested in though:

we're a group of fire performers and fire toy manufacturers in vancouver, british columbia, and we've finally gotten off our asses and gotten online! you can find us at www.pyroprod.com
currently we only have a few product models online, but as we grow, we hope people in the community will stop by and see how we're doing. to make it even more fun, we've put in a community section, where we'll be putting up links and artist profile pages, a gallery section for videos, and photos; and a forum! we'll be taking submission requests for your photos and email submissions for video content.

as we grow, we hope to offer even more, and we hope to see many of you in our forums when we do!

Where can I buy glow poi in Van?

I'm desperately seeking a set of super glowy indoor-safe poi in Vancouver. I will buy yours from you, or would love to know if any retail somewhere. Usually I would make them myself, but am running out of time! I can work with a variety of shapes and colors.

Thanks so much. Can't wait to see those of you that are heading to BRC.

Get a Taste of Fire Dance!!

Dip your toe into the world of firedance---see what it's like to spin poi for two nights!!

Monday, July 31st and August 1st, Mystress Fyre, Belva Stone, will be holding a Beginner's Fire Dance workshop at Studio Seven in Vancouver. This will be a brief introduction into the world of spinning poi.
In this two night workshop one will learn what it takes to spin poi, gain the feel for it and learn a few moves too! Butterfly Combinations and Weave/Corkscrew Combinations will be covered. This workshop is designed to offer a small sampling of all that Fire Dance is to those who are interested. No fire will be used at any time in this class.
Why a two night workshop? WHy not just one night? In Belva's 6 years of teaching it's been her experience that learning poi in small but frequent doses does wonders as opposed to one long gruelling session. The body begins to cap out after 1.5 to 2 hours which is how long she's set her sessions for.
Who is Mystress Fyre?? Mystress Fyre, Belva Stone, is a born and raised Canadian that's spent a good amount of time living in San Francisco. It was there that she first saw fire dance 6 years ago! Since then she's been travelling around teaching, performing and choreographing all different kinds of Shows! This will be one of Mystress Fyre's last poi sessions in Vancouver as she's headed back down South to Teach Fire Dance at a Non-Profit Metal Arts School in West Oakland this summer.

WHEN?
July 31st and Aug 1st.
TIME??
8:30pm till 10:30pm both nights
COST??
$90 ($65 for tuition + $25 for practice poi to keep)

Hi All,

I was wondering if there is anyone in this tribe that is interested in helping out with the Mondo Spider Project... we're looking for a few people to help out in July and early August. No skills required... so long as you are enthusiastic and eager to learn stuff. The spider is being built in Vancouver and Burnaby... but if you live in Seattle and you think you'll be in Vancouver fairly often, that works too.

feel free to email me directly: leigh8959 at gmail.com

cheers,
